The WISE spacecraft took an important image of Comet Hartley 2. It will be used by the EPOXI spacecraft, which will fly by the comet in November 2010. Both missions are provided to you through the work of NASA.
Some of you may wish to see this very close encounter with Earth -- within 11.2 million miles of our planet.
Check out the October 2, 2010 iTWire article 'Aim your telescope for Comet Hartley 2.'
Besides offering nice backyard viewing with binoculars or a telescope, the comet is also an important part of our exploration of space.
On November 4, 2010, the EPOXI probe is scheduled to make a very close approach to Hartley 2 - within 435 miles (700 kilometers) of the comet.
The EPOXI mission is the current mission of the previously completed Deep Impact mission.
The term EPOXI is a combination of names for two of the mission's components: (1) the Extrasolar Planet Observations and Characterization (EPOCh) and (2) the Hartley 2 flyby, called the Deep Impact eXtended Investigation (DIXI).
