Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

Could part of Space Station go to an asteroid?

Science - Space

If some NASA scientists have their way, part of the International Space Station may end up being sent as part of a manned spacecraft to a nearby asteroid. Will we see such a concept developed in the next decade?

Dr. Brian Wilcox is part of the Robotics group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Wilcox and his colleagues have proposed using the Space Station's Tranquility module, also called Node 3, for the primary living space for astronauts going to an asteroid.

Wilcox and fellow colleagues recently made such a proposal at a two-day workshop held by NASA involving near-Earth objects (NEOs). The workshop concluded its activities on August 11, 2010.

The team proposed connecting the Tranquility module to two pressurized exploration vehicles (each carrying two astronauts) and possibly other modules - that is, construct a spacecraft out in space in order to save some cost for such a mission.

See a concept image of the spacecraft at the August 11, 2010 MSNBC article 'Part of space station could go to asteroid'.

The months-long mission may also include a centrifuge that would simulate a fraction of gravity on Earth to help astronauts adapt better to the long trip to an asteroid.

And, ultimately, the project would help to recycle some of the Space Station instead of destroying it when its mission is over.
