Space Shuttle makes 'picture-perfect' landing of STS-129 mission

Science - Space

On Friday morning, November 27, 2009, the space shuttle Atlantis landed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida after a successful mission to the International Space Station.

The STS-129 mission ended at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) upon the wheels hitting the concrete pavement on the NASA runway in Florida.

The space shuttle Atlantis made a “picture-perfect” landing on runway 33 at the Kennedy Space Center, in Florida, a day after the STS-129 astronauts ate an unexpected Thanksgiving dinner in space while orbiting the Earth.

The mission was dedicated to re-supplying the International Space Station with additional supplies, along with performing three spacewalks for a variety of tasks outside of the ISS.

On its final full day in space, the crew of STS-129 woke up to the Frank Sinatra song “Fly Me to the Moon.” Later, they ate a traditional Thanksgiving dinner onboard the space shuttle Atlantis.

For additional information on their activities on Thanksgiving Day in orbit about the Earth, please read the 11-26-2009 NASAspaceflight.com article “Flight Controllers Review Thermal Margin Control for Atlantis.”

The completion of the STS-129 mission now leaves only five space shuttle missions left until the NASA Space Transportation System (STS) program, or the Space Shuttle program, is retired.
