The solid rocket boosters (SRBs) carried the orbiter high into the sky. They successfully separated from the external tank and the orbiter and its crew.
Later, the NASA spokesperson for the mission reported that the orbiter’s three main engines are working perfectly as it continues to power Atlantis into orbit about Earth.
Still later, the main engine cutoff (MECO) was confirmed by the NASA Booster Officer, and the external tank was jettisioned a few seconds later.
The space shuttle is now in its preliminary orbit in space.
"A flawless climb to orbit" was the statement by NASA, as to the performance of the space shuttle Atlantis during its launch phase.
The crewmembers of the space shuttle Atlantis are now on their way to the International Space Station (ISS) for their mission to deliver and install materials into and onto the ISS.
Three spacewalks are scheduled for the eleven day mission in space.
