And, the abstract continues to state: “Near-infrared spectra of the largest example confirm this composition, and repeated imaging showed fading over several months, as expected for sublimating ice. Thermal models of one site show that millimeters of sublimation occurred during this fading period, indicating clean ice rather than ice in soil pores.”

That is, ice formed within the craters, but it sublimated (went from an ice to a gas, and evaporated into the atmosphere) over time.

At the NASA website “New Impact Craters on Mars,” images (above half way down the page) from October 2008 and January 2009 show ice at the earlier time, but which disappeared at the later time.

The caption states, “The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took these images of a fresh, 6-meter-wide (20-foot-wide) crater on Mars on Oct. 18, 2008, (left) and on Jan. 14, 2009. Each image is 35 meters (115 feet) across. This crater's depth is estimated to be 1.33 meters (4.4 feet).”

The abstract concludes, “Our derived ice-table depths are consistent with models using higher long-term average atmospheric water vapor content than present values. Craters at most of these sites may have excavated completely through this clean ice, probing the ice table to previously unsampled depths of meters and revealing substantial heterogeneity in the vertical distribution of the ice itself.”

And, the NASA article makes an interesting observation based on this research concerning exploration performed by NASA in the 1970s with its Viking program At that time, the Viking 2 orbiter (along with an orbiter) was sent to Mars. It operated on Mars for over 1,200 Martian days, until its mission was discontinued in April 1980.

The article states, “The ice exposed by fresh impacts suggests that NASA's Viking Lander 2, digging into mid-latitude Mars in 1976, might have struck ice if it had dug only 10 centimeters (4 inches) deeper.”
