The record of thirteen people in space at one time was first recorded when the seven-member U.S. STS-67 space shuttle crew were in space along with the three-member Russian Soyuz TM-20 crew (at the Mir space station) and the three-member Russian/U.S. TM-21 crew (also at the Mir space station) during March 14-18, 1995.
With this mission in the record books, NASA has only eight shuttle missions left before the fleet is retired. All remaining missions, with its three space shuttles, are dedicated to completing the construction of the ISS. The retirement of the shuttle fleet is scheduled for the end of 2010.
