The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Gliese 581 d has a mass equaling seven Earths, or about half as massive as the planet Uranus. It has an orbit of about 66.8 days. It has the possibility of supporting life, as it also lies within the habitable zone of the star.
The team also re-analyzed the characteristics of 581 d and found it to be within the habitable zone, where previously it was thought to be outside of it.
Dr. Stephane Udry, another member of the team, stated, “Gliese 581 d is probably too massive to be made only of rocky material, but we can speculate that it is an icy planet that has migrated closer to the star …“‘d’ could even be covered by a large and deep ocean — it is the first serious 'water world' candidate.” [SpaceDaily.com]
Dr. Mayor spoke about his team’s discovery on April 21, 2009, while attending the European Joint National Astronomy meeting, which was held at the University of Hertforshire in the United Kingdom.
Mayor concludes in the SpaceDaily.com article, “It is amazing to see how far we have come since we discovered the first exoplanet around a normal star in 1995 — the one around 51 Pegasi…. The mass of Gliese 581 e is 80 times less than that of 51 Pegasi b. This is tremendous progress in just 14 years.”
As of April 21, 2009, according to The Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia, astronomers have now found 341 exoplanets, including this discovery of Gliese 581 e.
