In the middle of the Lyrid meteor shower, you’ll also see the planet Venus and the crescent Moon up close and personal. They will be close together in the eastern sky and near the horizon.
In fact, in the western part of North America Venus will gradually disappear behind the Moon at about 5:00 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) and then reappear about one hour later.
Look low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.
The lunar occultation involves the Moon, which will be in a 9% crescent shape--a narrow slice of the Moon will be lit up by the Sun.
The April 17, 2009 NASA article Venus Disappears during Meteor Shower states “The Moon-Venus conjunction is pure coincidence. It has nothing to do with the Lyrid display other than insurance. Even if the shower fizzles, the sight of a 9% crescent Moon located so close to brilliant Venus is guaranteed to make your day."
The NASA article also includes a map of the lunar occultation of Venus, which shows specific locations in the Northern Hemisphere.
You can also hear the meteor shower if you listen to the live signals from the U.S. Air Force Surveillance Radar, which is located in Texas. Check it out at: http://spaceweatherradio.com/. The noise you hear will be tiny meteors hitting the Earth’s atmosphere.
