Back on the ground, Joyce McCloud states,
“This is the last call. We’re close to deadline and we have no adult or college applications. Our deadline is May 1, and we really need to fill those two categories before Scott Altman’s last flight.”
For their project NASA astronaut Scott Altman has agreed to fly a piece of gold lamé fabric into space when he commands his mission to the Hubble Telescope.
When Altman returns to Earth he will go back home to Pekin, Illinois, and hand over the fabric so that it can be stitched into thirteen space quilts that have been designed by the winners of this Space Program Design Contest.
According to the April 7, 2009 Pekin Daily Times article
Space quilt contest deadline fast approaching, by Valari Hyatt,
“McCloud said participants do not have to make the actual quilt — they just have to design it. All designs must relate to space and the space program. Winning quilts will be displayed throughout Tazewell County before they are auctioned off to raise funds for the museum.”
Hyatt also reports that, “
The contest is open to all Tazewell County residents. Categories include preschool, kindergarten, grades one through eight, high school, college and adult. One winner will be selected from each category.”
As McCloud declares, the problem is that no one has submitted a design from the college and adult categories.
She states,
“We really need quilts from college and adult categories. There’s still time, but time is running out.”
