NASA's Fermi sees largest gamma-ray burst

Science - Space

Such a far distance away means that the GRB 080916C gamma-ray burst was near the center of the universe, considering that most scientists believe the universe to be about 13.7 billion light-years old.

Many cosmologists think the universe is between 13.61 and 13.85 billion years old, having been created by the Big Bang.

That is, the center of the Universe (where the Big Bang is theoretically thought to have occurred) is about 13.7 billion light-years away since one light-year is the distance that light travels in one year while in the vacuum of space.

Such a distance away to observe the GRB is a remarkable accomplishment and observation for the Fermi Telescope.

In fact, Julie McEnery, a Fermi deputy project scientist (at the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland), stated, “Already, this was an exciting burst. But with the GROND team's distance, it went from exciting to extraordinary." [NASA]

Additional information about the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is found at the NASA website “Fermi Space Telescope: Exploring the Extreme Universe.”
