ESA names second ATV after astronomer Johannes Kepler

Science - Space

The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced that its second Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) will be named Johannes Kepler.

The first ATV was named after pioneering science fiction writer Jules Verne. In March and April 2008 it carried a variety of supplies into orbit, automatically docked with the ISS, boosted the station's orbit, and then removed 2.5 tonnes of waste that was destroyed when the ATV burned up on re-entry.

The second ATV, scheduled to fly in mid-2010, has been named after astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, the discoverer of the laws of planetary motion.

"We are proud that Europe's second ATV will carry the name of Johannes Kepler," says Simonetta Di Pippo, ESA's director of human spaceflight.

"A world-renowned European scientist, his name reflects how Europe's role in human spaceflight and exploration is rooted in a long tradition of science and technological progress.

"The next ATV mission will be the confirmation of Europe's commitment to and interest in the ISS for the years to come as the first step in a global space exploration effort."

Johannes Kepler is already being built in Germany by EADS Astrium, the industrial prime contractor for the ATV.

A further three ATVs are planned to follow Johannes Kepler, with th efinal mission scheduled for 2013.
