Saturn moon Enceladus has plumes with speeds over 1,300 mph

Science - Space

Hansen says their data indicates that because the speeds of ejection are so fast, the possibility that the material is liquid is very likely.

According to the AP article, Hansen says that attaining speeds faster than the speed of sound "… is hard to do without liquids,"

Although the research does not conclusively proof the water is liquid, it does lend strong evidence for the presence of liquid water.

Other scientists state that past research has shown that ice particles can be shot out at speeds over the speed of sound and at the cold temperatures found on the Saturn’s inner moon Enceladus.

Whatever the case is (that of liquid or solid water), Hansen said. "Enceladus is sort of helpfully spewing out its innards.” [AP]

Right now, planetary scientists are hopeful that they will eventually be able to show that microscopic life has either been present in the past or is now present within our solar system, besides our Earth.

If such evidence is found within our solar system, it adds further hope that life is also present throughout our Universe.

Science fiction writers have written about such alien life for ages, but we are now in the infancy of seriously searching for it through our technology and ingenuity.
