Hubble homes in on huge stars

Science - Space

The Hubble Space Telescope has provided a detailed image of two of our galaxy's most massive stars.

The stars - WR 25 and Tr16-244 - are in the Carina Nebula, which is some 7500 light years distant.

WR 25 was recently determined to be at least two stars, the more massive of which could weigh more than 50 times as much as the Sun. The smaller of the pair is thought to be about half that size, and orbits its partner every 208 days.

As for Tr16-244, the Hubble image has revealed that it is a triple star. Two are so close together that they were previously thought to be one. The third may take hundreds of thousands of years to orbit the larger pair.

WR 25 and Tr16-244 are of interest to astronomers as they are though to be the source of radiation causing a gas globule to evaporate into space, possibly causing the creation of new stars.

Both WR 25 and Tr16-244 are extremely bright, emitting mainly ultraviolet radiation.
