STS-126’s Endeavour does rndz, proxops, dock with Space Station

Science - Space

The STS-126 crew used the Orbiter Boom Sensor System (OBSS), which was connected on the end of Endeavour’s robotic arm, to observe the heat shield from the front tip of the orbiter to its backend, at the pod of the Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS).

The crew concluded that the shield was in good condition with no observed problems.

The crew also ran inspections of the Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs) for EVA-1 (ExtraVehicular Activity-1), scheduled for Tuesday (flight day 5 (FD-5)).

The EVA is to be conducted by NASA mission specialists Stefanyshyn-Piper and Bowen.

During the first EVA, Stefanyshyn-Piper and Bowen will transfer an empty Nitrogen Tank Assembly from External Stowage Platform-3 and place it inside the space shuttle’s cargo bay.

They will also transfer a new Flex Hose Rotary Coupler to the External Stowage Platform-3; remove an insulation cover from the berthing mechanism of the Kibo External Facility; and clean and lubricate the starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ).

After completing their fifteen-day mission, the crew is expected to land at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Saturday, November 29, 2008.

Landing is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. EST.
