Indian lunar probe hits Moon

Science - Space

According to ISRO officials, the primary instruments on the probe, nicknamed “Aditya,” consisted of a radar altimeter (for measuring the distance between the probe and the Moon’s surface during descent) and mass spectrometer (for analysis of the weak lunar atmosphere and the Moon’s surface, especially as the probe kicked up dust as it approached the surface).

The Aditya probe was painted in the national colors of India: green, white, and orange.

The 34-kilogram (75-pound) probe was part of the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, which was launched on October, 22, 2008 from the Sriharikota space center in southern India, near the southeastern city of Chennai.

Indian officials state that the cost for its first unmanned mission to the Moon is US$79 million.

The mission is a precursor for possible “soft” landings of unmanned vehicles in the near future and for a manned mission to the Moon in the year 2020.

Further information about the
Chandrayaan-1 mission is found on the NASA Solar System Exploration website.

The successful hard landing of the MIP coincides with the birthday (November 14)  of Jawaharial Nehru, commonly called "Pandit Nehru." Born on November 14, 1889,  Nehru was an important leader in Indian independence from Great Britain, and the first prime minister of the Republic of India. He died on May 27, 1964.
