UFO files published by Ministry of Defence

Science - Space

Things start getting interesting with the file that details how the crews of no less than six RAF Tornado jets from 2 Squadron, Laarbruch, were on an exercise being controlled and monitored by Dutch radar and reported being overtaken by a giant UFO.

Then there is the strange tale of Lieutenant Milton Torres, a 26 year old USAF Sabre jet fighter pilot back in 1957. He reports how a "blip was burning a hole in the radar" such was the intensity of the craft he had been ordered to shoot down over Norwich, England.

According to Torres he was ordered to intercept and shoot at will, even before taking off that night from the Royal Air Force base in Kent where he was stationed. Not that it came to that, as he was unable to keep up with the UFO which went off the radar at a speed of 9,941 miles per hour.

Just as weird is the account from 1991 of how an Alitalia passenger jet heading for Heathrow Airport had a very close encounter of its own. The files reveal how the captain of the aircraft shouted 'Look out' as the object shot past them.

The formerly top secret files report that investigations into the event ruled out a missile or even a space rocket, and it was said not to be a weather balloon either. Left with no rational explanation, the Ministry of Defence closed the investigation and the file.

Don't expect this to be the last we hear of these unexplainable encounters with Unidentified Flying Objects either. The Ministry of Defence is expected to release a total of 200 previously classified files over the course of the coming four years.

Don't expect any official explanations either, though. By releasing the documents, the National Archive and by extension the UK government itself is saying make up your own mind on all this...
