Garriott is flying as a guest of the Russian Federal Space Agency (RSA) through a contract made through the space tourist company Space Adventures, based out of Virginia in the United States.

Richard Garriott is the son of former NASA astronaut Owen K. Garriott.

Upon entering the International Space Station, Garriott reported to the RSA mission control center, "I can fly! I'm sure excited so far." [Space.com]
