Unmanned plane “Zephyr” flies over three days--unofficial record

Science - Space

The FAI world record for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was set in 2001 by a jet-powered U.S. Air Force surveillance aircraft, called the “RQ-4 Global Hawk,” which was manufactured by Northrop Grumman. The world record for endurance of an unmanned plane, by Global Hawk, is over 30 hours.

The world record will probably not be recognized by the FAI because QinetiQ did not meet the rules set down by the governing body. QinetiQ spokesperson Douglas Millard stated, "We were concentrating more on the flight than the record.” [The Associated Press: “QinetiQ says it has broken unmanned flight record”]

A photograph of the Zephyr is found on the BBC News website “Solar plane flies into the night.”

Chris Kelleher is the technical director and "pilot" for the Zephyr. He told the BBC News, "This aeroplane is going to go a lot higher and a lot further. You ain't seen nothing yet."
