The first launch from Launch Complex 39A occurred on November 9, 1967, when the unmanned Apollo 4 lifted off with the use of its Saturn V rocket.

The LC-39 launch complex is located at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island in Florida.

LC-39 was originally built for the Apollo program of the 1960s. It was later modified to support Space Shuttle (Space Transportation System) launches, which began in the early 1980s.

LC-39 will be modified again for use with Project Constellation, which is NASA’s newest manned space project.

Project Constellation will send astronauts to the Moon and beyond using the Orion space capsules and Ares rockets.
