On June 18, 1983, Sally Kristen Ride became the first American women in space as she flew onboard NASA’s space shuttle Challenger on mission STS-7.

She went up into space one more time (in 1984) before retiring as a U.S. astronaut.

Ride left NASA in 1987, but did not retire until 1997, to work at the Stanford University Center of International Security and Arms Control.

Two years later, she became a professor of physics at the University of California at San Diego, specializing in research on the theory of non-linear beam-wave interactions Ride also became the director of the California Space Institute at that time.

She is currently the president and chief executive officer of Sally Ride Science, an organization dedicated to making science entertaining to students, along with making quality programs and products that entertain, educate, and inspire our young generation. Ride founded the company in 2001.
