Kibo added to International Space Station

Science - Space

The spacewalk, the first of three planned EVAs (extravehicular activities) for the STS-124 crew, lasted six hours, forty-eight minutes.

The Kibo PM science laboratory will be opened for the first time in space on Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

It is the largest component addition made to the International Space Station, with a length of 37 feet (11 meters) and an Earth weight of 32,000 pounds (14,500 kilograms).

The next space shuttle mission will add a robotic arm and an outdoor platform for experiments to Kibo.

The previous space shuttle mission delivered a small storage compartment for Kibo. It will be attached to the PM on a later spacewalk this week.

Further information about Kibo is found at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA’s) website “Kibo: Japanese Experiment Module.”

Status reports on the STS-124 mission are found at the NASA website “STS-124 Status Reports.”
