NASA Television to broadcast HD Earth

Science - Space

NASA has announced that it will broadcast dramatic views of Earth from images taken by its astronauts in high definition television (HDTV) in honor of Earth Day, April 22, 2008.

A special hour-long program on NASA Television will show views of Earth taken in High Definition (HD) by astronauts on the space shuttle and the International Space Station.

NASA Television is available through the Web at NASA TV and on your local cable or satellite television system.

The program will be first aired for two hours beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on Friday, April 18, 2008 (which is already past, unfortunately).

However, a second broadcast will air on Monday, April 21, 2008, beginning at 6 a.m. It will repeat itself throughout the day and onto the next day, until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2008--Earth Day 2008.

The broadcasts on Monday and Tuesday (April 21-22) will include the Earth views, along with discussions by Dr. Justin Wilkinson, a scientist with the Crew Earth Observations Office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Clear Lake City, just outside of Houston, Texas.

For additional information on astronaut photography from the Crew Earth Observations Office, please go to: “The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth.”

The footage will air on standard NASA TV during regularly scheduled Video File broadcasts.

For technical information on how to receive the special broadcast in high definition, and for NASA TV streaming video, downlink and scheduling information, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.
