NASA launches new website “NASA Science … for the benefit of all”

Science - Space

The Science Mission Directorate of NASA has announced the opening of a new website that “ … provides enhanced and engaging information about NASA's vast scope of scientific endeavors and achievements.”

Its new website is located at: “NASA Science.”

On its front page is four large, dramatic images: “Earth,” with a picture of our planet; “Heliophysics,” showing our Sun; “Planets,” showing the ringed-planet Saturn, and “Astrophysics,” emphasizing a small, distinct part of the Universe.

According to its new website: “The Science Mission Directorate (SMD) engages the Nation’s science community, sponsors scientific research, and develops and deploys satellites and probes in collaboration with NASA’s partners around the world to answer fundamental questions requiring the view from and into space. SMD seeks to understand the origins, evolution, and destiny of the universe and to understand the nature of the strange phenomena that shape it.”

The new website continues to state: “SMD also seeks to understand:

•    the nature of life in the universe and what kinds of life may exist beyond Earth;
•    the solar system, both scientifically and in preparation for human exploration; and
•    the Sun and Earth, changes in the Earth-Sun system, and the consequences of the Earth-Sun relationship for life on Earth.”

The site includes the following:

- "Interactive tables and searches for Earth, heliophysics, planetary and astrophysics missions
- Insight into dark matter and dark energy, planets around other stars, climate change, Mars and space weather
- Resources for researchers including links to upcoming science solicitations and opportunities
- A mapping of science questions for NASA science missions and the data they produce
- A citizen-scientist page with access to resources that equip the public to engage in scientific investigation
- Expanded "For Educators" and "For Kids" pages to provide access to a broader range of resources for learning the science behind NASA missions
- Easy-to-navigate design and an improved search engine to help find information.”

The new NASA website also talks about the International Year of Astronomy 2009.

Additional information can also be found at “International Year of Astronomy 2009”. The website makes the statement: “All humans should realize the impact of astronomy and basic sciences on our daily lives, and understand better how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society.”

The new NASA Science website is: http://nasascience.nasa.gov.
