The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Space is not just about exploring space with humans, but is a complex mix of technologies involving weather satellites, aviation and aeronautics, communications satellites, planetary exploration, defense, and many others.
The manned space program of NASA is just one part of many technologies used to benefit all citizens of the United States and other countries of the world.
Much of NASA’s many activities are directed toward benefits here on Earth, whether it is better weather forecasting, better protection of our national defense, or more efficient means to grow crops. Today, it even involves space tourism.
NASA is a major player in all of these technologies.
Thus, it is important to assure that sufficient money is provided to NASA but it is equally important that NASA uses this money in the most efficient way possible.
A strong NASA is a strong United States.
But, an inefficient NASA is just another inefficient government bureaucracy, which we do not need.
Private and public "watchdog" agencies such as NASA Watch, NASA Office of Inspector General, and the GAO are helpful at assuring that large government projects are run efficiently for the benefit of all U.S. citizens.
The work of independent agencies, such as the Government Accountability Office, which review the progress of NASA, are good ways to assure this process goes as smoothly as possible for the maximum benefit to the American people and for U.S. allies around the world (because many projects done by NASA are international in scope).
According to the website of the GAO: the GAO is “… known as "the investigative arm of Congress" and "the congressional watchdog." GAO supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and helps improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people. GAO's work includes oversight of federal programs; insight into ways to make government more efficient, effective, ethical and equitable; and foresight of long-term trends and challenges. GAO's reports, testimonies, legal decisions and opinions make a difference for Congress and the Nation.”
