Jules Verne demo two successful

Science - Space

The second test approach of the Jules Verne ATV to the International Space Station has been hailed as "impressive".

The manoeuvre brought the automated supply vessel within 11m of the ISS's docking port.

John Ellwood, ATV project manager at ESA said "the only word that comes to mind about today is impressive."

The autonomous vehicle is being tested prior to the first docking attempt, which is scheduled for April 3.

Monday's demonstration included two firsts. The optical navigation system worked successfully, and the ISS crew were able to issue Retreat and Escape commands to Jules Verne. Retreat instructs the ATV to back off to a distance of 19m, while Escape sends it to a safe location well away from the space station.

"This demonstration day confirmes the performance of the vehicle is even better than we had hoped for," said Nicolas Chamussy, Astrium ATV project manager. (Astrium is the ESA's prime contractor for the ATV program.)

"This is a world premier for automated rendezvous using optical sensors, following the world’s first demonstration of relative GPS navigation between Jules Verne and the Station performed on Saturday."
