Atlantis leaves International Space Station

Science - Space

The space shuttle Atlantis has undocked from the International Space Station to begin its journey back to Earth.

The spacecraft separated above the Coral Sea north-east of Australia.

The first task after separation was to fly around the station to collect still and video images of the ISS including its newly expanded solar arrays. The Atlantis crew have also inspected the shuttle's thermal protection system using the robot arm.

A dislodged thermal blanket was just one of the problems that dogged STS-117. Launch was considerably delayed after the spacecraft suffered hail damage on the launch pad, and a faulty power switch caused the failure of six computers that control the space station's orientation as well as the oxygen and water supplies.

Astronaut Suni Williams, the new female record holder for long-duration spaceflights, is returning to Earth aboard Atlantis.

The shuttle is expected to land at Cape Canaveral on Thursday. If weather conditions prevent that, Atlantis may land at either Edwards Air Force Base or White Sands Space Harbor on Friday.
