Euro spacecraft tracker goes online

Science - Space

The European Space Agency has made it easy for casual stargazers to find out where ESA and ESA-related spacecraft are at present.

The new ESA Spacecraft Tracker shows the ground tracks of the International Space Station, Integral, XMM-Newton, Cluster, Hubble, GIOVE-A, ERS-2, Envisat and Proba.

The path of any one of these craft is displayed in real time on a Google Map, with the actual location (as opposed to its dead-reckoning position) updated hourly. The spacecraft's position remains in the centre of the display, with the map scrolling beneath it.

So as I write, I can see that Integral is passing over Canada's Hudson Bay,  GIOVE-A is off the south-west coast of Australia, and the International Space Station is over China.

Something the tracker brings home is just how fast some of the craft pass over the Earth's surface.

If the ESA tracker sparks your interest, the Advanced link above the map takes you to www.n2yo.com, which provides real-time tracking of a much wider range of satellites as well as convenient features such as "What's up in the sky?"
