Falcon fails to fly - again

Science - Space

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has again failed to launch its Falcon 1 rocket following a 25 hour delay caused by a communications glitch.

The launch was aborted with just one second remaining in the countdown. The reason was not clear from the audio feed from the launch site at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, southeast of Hawaii.

SpaceX hopes to restart the countdown shortly.

Yesterday's launch was scrubbed because the operating software failed to allow for the fact that the switch between landline and radio telemetry.

The company's plan is that Falcon will become a relatively low-cost vehicle for getting payloads into orbit, due in part to a reusable first stage.

Kwajalein is the home of the US Army's Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site.
