NASA has issued a ‘Statement regarding the status of Lisa Nowak’ where NASA say U.S. Navy Captain Lisa Nowak’s “detail as a NASA astronaut has been terminated, effective March 8, by mutual agreement between NASA and the U.S. Navy.”
Nowak only ever flew one mission, dubbed STS-121, in 2006. However, Nowak earned selection as a member of the astronaut class 11 years ago in 1996.
NASA says that it lacks the administrative means to “deal appropriately with the criminal charges pending against Nowak. Because Nowak is a naval officer on assignment to NASA, rather than a NASA civil servant, she is not subject to administrative action by NASA”.
The whole affair does not seem to have ended Nowak’s career as an officer of the military, with NASA stating that Nowak will receive her next assignment from the U.S. Navy.
NASA states that their decision to terminate Nowak’s “detail does not reflect any position by NASA on the criminal charges pending in Florida”.
Nowak had been on 30 days probationary leave after being arrested on attempted kidnapping charges in Orlando, Florida, following the love triangle between Bill Oefelein and Colleen Shipman. Nowak has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary and battery.
