While the Shenzhou VII spacecraft will be ready this year, delays in the development of spacesuits mean the spacewalks will take place next year, reports the Shanghai Daily.
The timing of the spacewalks has nothing to do with the Beijing Olympics, which take place in August 2008, says Qi Faren - chief designer of China's first five Shenzhou spaceships and chief consultant for Shenzhou VI and VII.
"This is a scientific project. Its ultimate goal is to ensure the safety of astronauts and the success of experiments," Qi said. He also said that the best season to launch the spacecraft is in spring or autumn.
The launch of Shenzhou VII next year will be only China's third manned space flight, the first undertaken in 2003 and the second in 2005. China already has plans for Shenzhou missions VIII, IX and X, with the aim of joining the three craft to create an orbiting space laboratory around 2010. The United States has opposed requests by China to participate in the International Space Station program.
