New FDA Dinner Plate replaces Food Pyramid

Science - Health

The United States defines its diet through its American Dietary Guidelines provided by the Food and Drug Administration. After 19 years, the food pyramid is ancient history and the new colorful, 4-part Diner Plate promises to be easier to use.

The new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) food icon is called 'My Plate.'

It is divided into four sections - green represents vegetables, the red part is for fruits, orange is reserved for grains, and the color purple is easy to remember because P is for Protein.

Off to the side is a separate section for dairy, and it is colored blue.

Some of the more common sense ideas that the new My Plate hopes to convey to people is to 'Enjoy your food, but eat less' and 'Avoid oversized portions.'

And, the FDA also wants everyone to know that half of the Dinner Plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables.

In addition, when you eat grains makes them whole grains and when you drink milk make is fat-free or low-fat (1%).

Page two concludes with information as to where on the FDA website to learn more about My Plate.
