Lose weight with 2 glasses of water before meals

Science - Health

A U.S. study has shown that drinking two eight-ounce glasses of water before meals helps people to consume fewer calories during meals. And, fewer calories consumed means a way to lose weight!

The researchers are presenting a lecture on their results at the 2010 National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), which is being held in Boston, Massachusetts, from August 22 to 26, 2010.

Dr. Brenda Davy, an associate professor of nutrition at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Blacksburg) and a registered dietitian, is one of the authors of the study.

Within the WebMD article Water May Be Secret Weapon in Weight Loss, she states, "We are presenting results of the first randomized controlled intervention trial demonstrating that increased water consumption is an effective weight loss strategy."

She adds, "We found in earlier studies that middle aged and older people who drank two cups of water right before eating a meal ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories during the meal."

Davy emphasizes that substituting sweetened drinks for water will not work in helping to control weight gain.

Davy states, "If you look at research on beverage consumption trends, our average intake of sugar-sweetened beverages has increased dramatically in the past three or four decades. So, likely we are drinking other beverages in place of water."

Page two concludes.
