South Korean researchers have found that men who are binge drinkers and have hypertension (high blood pressure) have a much greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease, such as in a heart attack or stroke.

The study's results were published on August 19, 2010, in the journal Stroke.

The title of the article is 'Binge Drinking and Hypertension on Cardiovascular Disease Mortality in Korean Men and Women. A Kangwha Cohort Study

Its authors are: Jae Woong Sull; Sang Wook Yi, Chung Mo Nam, Kwisook Choi, and Heechoul Ohrr.

The South Korean researchers examined the effects of both hypertension (HTN, or high blood pressure) and binge drinking on the risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease.

They also looked at hypertension and binge drinking separately with regards to mortality (death) risk.

The researchers studied 6,100 South Korean citizens from Kangwha County who were equal to or over the age of 55 years.

The Korean researchers used data from these participants from March 1985 to December 31, 2005 -- a period of 20.8 years.
