WHO says good-bye to H1N1 pandemic

Science - Health

The World Health Organization declared on July 10, 2010, that the H1N1 swine flu pandemic is over worldwide.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) also stated that the H1N1 flu bug will still be showing up as a 'seasonal virus.'

Within the July 10, 2010 WebMD article Swine Flu Pandemic Over, WHO Declares, Margaret Chan, the director-general of WHO, stated, 'The new H1N1 virus has largely run its course.'

In the United States, the 'pandemic emergency declaration' for H1N1 expired on June 23, 2010.

The declaration was made for the world on July 10th because, according to information found within the WebMD article:

'¢    H1N1 has spread to all countries.
'¢    Many people in all age groups have some immunity to the H1N1, either via infection or vaccination.
'¢    There were no unusual summer outbreaks of H1N1.
'¢    H1N1 swine flu is no longer the dominant flu virus, crowding out others. Seasonal flu bugs -- H3N2 type A and type B viruses -- are being reported.

Page two concludes with why you should not let your guard down when it comes to any form of the influenza bug.
