Guys crushed more than gals in bad relationships

Science - Health

According to a new 2010 study from Wake Forest University and Florida State University, men are much more emotionally hurt than women are, when relationships turn sour.

The two researchers state in their research paper: 'Although social scientists have long assumed that intimate social relationships are more closely associated with women's than men's mental health, recent research indicates that there are no gender differences in the advantages of marriage and disadvantages of unmarried statuses when males' and females' distinct expressions of emotional distress are considered.'

U.S. sociologist Robin W. Simon, from Wake Forest University, one of the two authors of the study, contributed to the conclusion that women take more time to recover after relationships end.

Their paper added, 'These findings have led to the conclusion that there has been a convergence in the importance of intimate relationships for men's and women's mental health. However, these patterns may not be evident for nonmarital romantic relationships among current cohorts of young adults.'

The study, which was also researched by U.S. sociologist Anne E. Barrett, from Florida State University, also found that when problems occur in relationships, men take the bigger hit emotionally.

But, when the relationship is really good, then men are psychologically happier than women.
