The researchers found that patients in public hospitals in Australia are 'overall' 12% more likely to die than are patients in private hospitals in Australia.
The Productivity Commission is the independent research and advisory body for the Australian Government.
And, the Productivity Commission also found that mortality in 'large' public hospitals was 6.6% above the expected rate. The percentage in 'large' private hospitals was 18.2% below the expected rate.
The May 19, 2010 Sydney Morning Herald article 'Death rate higher in public hospitals' provides additional information on this subject matter.
The SMH article also talks about the 'very small' private and public hospitals in Australia.
It states, 'An even greater disparity in the mortality rates was found in the ''very small'' category, which deal with up to 2000 cases a year. At 4 per cent above the expected level, the death rate in those public hospitals was 40 per cent higher than in private hospitals.'
