The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has concerns that sleep and relaxation drinks containing melatonin may have an adverse affect on the human body. Scientific studies have yet to be conducted to prove whether they are safe or dangerous to the human body.
Relaxation drinks that contain melatonin (which sometimes are referred to as "anti-energy drinks") include products such as iChill, RelaxZen, Drank, and Dream Water.
Reliable scientific studies have yet to define whether these melatonin drinks are safe or not, which is a concern to the FDA (and should be a concern to consumers).
These drinks are commonly found in grocery stores and drug stores throughout the United States.
And, these relaxation drinks are often marketed as dietary supplements to children and teenagers for relaxation and to adults for ease in falling asleep.
However, in many other countries, such melatonin drinks are illegal.
According to media reports, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (
FDA) has already ordered the company Innovative Beverage Group (IBG), which makes
Drank, to prove that the use of melatonin is safe.
(After performing a search on the FDA website, I found no record of this warning. This doesn't mean it is not there--only that I couldn't easily find it. A Google search was performed on “melatonin,” “melatonin Drank,” “melatonin IBG,” and etc.)
The company Innovative Beverage Group advertises their product Drank as
“The beverage may be extremely relaxing and calming.”Page two continues with additional quotes from the IBG website, along with information on melatonin.
