The eyes have it: high-definition implants

Science - Health

A British ophthalmic surgeon has become the first doctor to implant an artificial lens into the eye that can be fine-tuned after the procedure is finished in order to produce vision that is better than 20/20.

Dr. Bobby Qureshi is the ophthalmic surgeon that performed this first high-tech procedure for cataracts and other eye problems.

Dr. Qureshi is a renowned consultant ophthalmic surgeon who is at the forefront of eye implants. Qureshi operates at The Park Hospital in Nottingham, The Warwickshire, Nuffield Hospital and the London Eye Hospital.

He is the Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Medical Director at the London Eye Hospital, located at 10 Harley Street, London, W1G 9PF, United Kingdom.

The light adjustable lens (LAL) is different from standard lens because of the flexibility of the material it is made from: unpolymerized silicon.

The material can be adjusted (fine-tuned) after it has been placed in the eye--allowing eye surgeons to make changes so that vision can be improved even further after the procedure.

Specifically, the procedure shines ultraviolet (UV) radiation (light) on certain parts of the lens to change its shape and curvature.
