Some of the statistics of the study are provided below.
They are:
• Mississippi: about
20% of its citizens are uninsured
• Mississippi: only
35.7% of adults 50 years or over receive screening and preventive care.
Mississippi: Robert Pugh, director of the Mississippi Primary Health Care Association, stated,
"When you compare Mississippi on almost any socio-economic profile, we are a struggling population that has a large percentage of low-income individuals, high unemployment rates, low rate of education.” [ABC News]
• Texas:
31.5% of working-age adults (18 to 64 years of age) are uninsured
• Massachusetts:
7.2% of working-age adults are uninsured
• Nevada:
23% of Medicare beneficiaries returned to hospitals within thirty days of their last stay.
• Oregon:
13% of Medicare beneficiaries returned to hospitals within thirty days of their last stay.
• Mississippi:
one-third of adult diabetics received the recommended preventive care
• Minnesota:
two-thirds of adult diabetics received the recommended preventive care
Overall:
• The thirteen states in the top quarter in 2007 were also in the top quarter of the states in 2009.
• Of the thirteen states in the lowest quarter of the states in 2007, only ten were in the lowest quarter in 2009.
• 1999-2000, two states had 23% or more of adults as being uninsured
• 2007-2008, nine states had 23% or more of adults as being uninsured
• 1999-2000, nine states had 163% or more of children as being uninsured
• 2007-2008, three states had 16% or more of children as being uninsured
• Fewer adults in 2009 are covered by health insurance in most states when compared to the study’s results in 2007.
• Health-care costs have risen from 2007 to 2009.
• Most states are covering children at higher percentages due primarily to the federal project “Children's Health Insurance Program”
