Skim milk at breakfast better than fruit drinks for weight control

Science - Health

The participants gave the researchers descriptions of how they felt throughout the morning, describing their feelings of fullness after breakfast, feelings of hungry during the morning, etc.

Then, they consumed a meal at lunch. They were allowed to eat until they felt full.

At that time, a measurement was taken of energy intake (that is, the number of kilojoules, or calories, they consumed).

The researchers found that the participants drinking skim milk in the morning consumed on average 2,432 kilojoules (581 calories) while those that drank fruit drink ate, on average, 2,658 kilojoules (635 calories) at lunch.

The milk drinkers felt fuller and more satisfied at not being hungry during the morning and, and that satisfaction became more pronounced as the morning progressed over the four-hour period.

Thus, the milk drinkers eat less food (less calories) at lunch than the fruit drinkers.

In fact, the milk drinkers ate about 55 fewer calories (or nearly 9% less food) than the fruit drinkers at lunch.

Page three concludes with the conclusions of the Australian researchers and additional information on milk and weight control.
