According to the CDC report Births: Final Data for 2006, the rate of having babies among Mississippi teenagers is 68.4 per 1,000 females versus 18.7 for teens in New Hampshire, nearly 3.7 times the difference between the highest state and the lowest one.
The report
Births: Final Data for 2006 appears at the
website of the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (
CDC) is a federal department concerned with the health and safety of the American people.
The CDC report states that the highest teen birth rates are in the southern and southwestern states, while they are the lowest in the northeastern states.
In fact, the overall teen birth rate in the United States increased in 26 of the 50 states in 2006.
The USA Today article “
Teen birth rates up in 26 states” quoted Paul Sutton, who is a NCHS demographer.
Sutton stated,
"To see 26 states with statistically significant increases is fairly remarkable. We're seeing increases in both the number of teens having births and also the rate at which they are having births. Both of them are going up."
