'Third-hand smoke': A new term, more health dangers

Science - Health

The researchers further stated, “We hypothesized that beliefs about thirdhand smoke would be associated with household smoking bans.”

The researchers collected data from 2,000 people in a national random digit-dial telephone survey between September and November 2005.

They asked questions relating to whether people thought that air breathed in a room where people smoked cigarettes the day before could harm the health of children.

Of the 2,000 people participating in the survey, 1,510 completed the survey and 1,478 answered all of the questions necessary to be included in this study.

Of these 1,478 people, 273 were smokers (18.5%) and 1,205 were non-smokers (81.5%).

The researchers found that 95.4% of non-smokers thought that second-hand smoke harms the health of children, while 84.1% of smokers believed second-hand smoke is detrimental to children’s health.

Second-hand smoke is the smoke that lingers in the air while smokers smoke their cigarettes and other tobacco-based products.

With regards to third-hand smoke, 65.2% of non-smokers thought that third-hand smoke harms children, while 43.3% of smokers thought that third-hand smoke was bad for the health of children.
