Skinny belly dancers should live long lives

Science - Health

The researchers found that 14,723 of the participants died during the study period.

After eliminating differences in weight among the subjects, the researchers found that the people with the most belly fat had about twice the risk of dying prematurely than did the people with the least amount of belly fat.

They also found that men with over 40-inch waists and women with over 35-inch waists had about double the risk of premature death as men with less than 34-inch waists and women with less than 28-inch waists.

The researchers concluded that for each 2-inch increase in waist circumference, there is a 17% increase in mortality in men and 13% increase in mortality in women.

Their abstract concluded, “These data suggest that both general adiposity and abdominal adiposity are associated with the risk of death and support the use of waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio in addition to BMI in assessing the risk of death.”

The lead author of the study, Tobias Pischon, from the Department of Epidemiology, German Institute of Human Nutrition, states, "Our study shows that accumulating excess fat around your middle can put your health at risk even if your weight is normal. There aren't many simple individual characteristics that can increase a person's risk of premature death to this extent, independent of smoking and drinking." [WebMD: “Belly Fat Doubles Death Risk ”]

Pischon added, "The most important result of our study is the finding that not just being overweight, but also the distribution of body fat, affects the risk of premature death.” [WebMD]

And, he continued, "Studies like this focus attention on the importance of measuring visceral fat, which is not now routinely done in clinical practice.” [WebMD]

Visceral fat is located inside the peritoneal cavity (between internal organs), as opposed to subcutaneous fat, which is found underneath the skin, and intramuscular fat, which is located around and between skeletal muscles.
