In an effort to standardize nutritional standards, avoid consumer confusion, and reduce obesity many of the country’s largest food and beverage companies are adopting the Smart Choices Program from The Keystone Center.
With U.S. consumers trying, in some respects, to eat healthier, many food and beverages companies have introduced lines of healthier foods and beverages.
However, nothing was standardized with regards to nutritional content, especially with what was healthy and what was not.
Therefore, many of these large companies got together with
The Keystone Center, a nonprofit public health organization based in Washington D.C., to develop a standard way to identify foods that are low in total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium (salt), and sugar.
They came up with the Smart Choices Program.
It in, a company is allowed to display the “Smart Choices” logo and a green check mark on the front of the package on those foods and beverages that meet or exceed the program’s nutritional guidelines.
The package will also display the amount of calories per serving and the number of servings in the package.
Page two continues with the logo from the Smart Choices Program, along with other information.
