A stroke of luck: Five ways to beat a stroke

Science - Health

A team of Massachusetts researchers found five healthy ways to cut the risk of strokes. Follow all five of these healthy lifestyle factors and you could reduce your chance of a stroke by up to 80%.

Their paper “Primary Prevention of Stroke by Healthy Lifestyle” was published online on August 12, 2008, in the journal Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association.

The authors of the study are: Stephanie E. Chiuve Eric B. Rimm, Kathryn M. Rexrode, Donna Spiegelman, Giancarlo Logroscino, and JoAnn E. Manson, all from various departments within Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

The researchers stated that many studies have been performed previously on the association of a healthy lifestyle and lower risks of diabetes, coronary heart disease, and overall cardiovascular disease.

However, little research has been performed on how a healthy lifestyle affects the risk of stroke, which is considered, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of long-term disabilities.

Consequently, these Massachusetts researchers sought to research whether any relationship exists between major factors of a healthy lifestyle and the reduced risk of stroke.

They conducted a study of 43,685 men from the “Health Professionals Follow-up Study ” (HPFS) and 71,243 women from the “Nurses’ Health Study” (NHS). The average age of the subjects at the beginning of the study was 54 years for men and 50 years for women.

In addition, none of the participants had been diagnosed with cancer or cardiovascular disease at the start of the study.
