Drive safer with passengers, except for young drivers

Science - Health

They found that, generally, drivers “display safer driving behavior when they are accompanied by passengers, and more passengers reduce driver's crash potential.”

However, their research also found “… that younger driver's crash potential increases with the presence of a younger passenger only” and “… that young drivers with only younger passengers are more likely to be involved in single-vehicle crashes in high-speed and low-volume conditions.”

They conclude, “The findings in this study provide insight into how the presence of passengers has an impact on driver behavior and traffic safety in various conditions.”

Lee commented in New Scientist magazine (in the article “Drive safe, drive in company,” issue July 12-18, 2008, page 25), “he [Lee] argues that the responsibility drivers feel towards their passengers might outweigh any distraction from talking to them, with one major caveat: youngsters drove worse if their passenger was younger than they were.”
