The TAH-t is the only artificial heart to be approved by both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the CE marking (CE) of the European Economic Area (EEA).
The artificial heart, a bridge-to-heart artificial device, will remain inside the patient until a natural donor heart becomes available. However, the surgical team points out that the artificial heart can remain inside a patient if a natural donor heart is not available or the patient is unsuitable for a natural transplant.
Drs. Jansz and Spratt are expected to lead St. Vincent’s Hospital in becoming the center for artificial heart transplants in the Asia-Pacific region.
St. Vincent’s Hospital is located on Victoria Street, Darlinghurst, about 1.2 mile (two kilometers) from Sydney’s central business district, in New South Wales, Australia. The hospital is owned by the Sisters of Charity Health Service (SCHS Darlinghurst Region).
The hospital is part of St. Vincent’s & Mater Health Sydney. It is a principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales and has professional affiliations with many universities, such as Australian Catholic University.
