Does size matter? Web survey seeks hard data

Science - Health

The Australian Centre for Sex, Health & Society at LaTrobe University is running a web-based survey to help investigate the relationship between men's body image and perceived penis size.

"Past research has suggested that some men are embarrassed about their genitals and genital size, especially regarding sexual and reproductive health," said PhD student Christoper Fox. "Understanding this relationship will assist in developing strategies for health promotion campaigns aimed at men's sexual and reproductive health."

Questions cover overall physique, hairiness, use of pornography and sex workers, as well as relative (eg 'average'), actual and desired penis length and girth. Other issues canvassed include penile enhancement surgery, grooming, tattooing and piercing, satisfaction with other body aspects such as height and hair, and overall self-regard.

No personally identifying information is collected. The survey can be completed online at www.mensbodies.com.au.

Fox is carrying out the research under the supervision of senior research fellow John Willis and the Centre's director, Professor Marian Pitts.
