The head of the European research team that suggested neutrinos may be able to travel faster than light has resigned.

The Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics announced today that the leader of the OPERA experiment, Antonio Ereditato has stepped down from that position.

Ereditato lead the team that announced the results of an experiment with the unavoidable conclusion that neutrinos could travel faster than light.

In announcing the results, the team essentially said, "Here are the results, we don't believe them but we can't fault them."

A few weeks later, they did fault them, announcing that the error seemed to be tied to an incorrectly mounted fibre optic connector cable which linked the GPS antenna to the data collection system.

It seems that a few weeks ago a rival CERN project, ICARUS determined that neutrinos would obey Einstein and were measured to travel at exactly the speed of light.  Note that both OPERA and ICARUS are projects operating under the auspices of CERN in conjunction with the Large Hadron Collider.

Plans are in place for a shoot-out between the two teams in May.  Ereditato's future plans are unknown but it seems he will not be part of this face-off.
