Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

Australian researchers granted money for solar research

Science - Energy

The Australian Solar Institute has awarded A$16 million for three major solar research projects in Australia. This money will help Australia maintain a leading role in the world in solar research.

The three research projects now possible in Australia due to the Australian Solar Institute (ASI) grant are:

(1) the building of a large scale solar air turbine (which could be beneficial for areas without a major water supply because such turbines run on air, not water).

(2) the development of a solar thermoelectric generator (which convert energy from the Sun into electricity), and

(3) a study of solar intermittency (or the irregularity of sunlight that sometimes adversely affects the national electricity grid in Australia -- this project is the first study to be conducted on the subject).

Dr. Alex Wonhas, who is the director of CSIRO's Energy Transformed Flagship, commented as to why this grant is so important to Australia.

He stated, 'CSIRO is recognised as a world leader in solar thermal research and, although the projects all differ, each contributes to the ultimate goal of creating solar energy at a cost of 10 to 14 cents per kilowatt hour.'

Dr. Wonhas added, 'We will have more than 30 scientists, engineers, chemists and technicians demonstrating and developing these important solar projects.'
